It has all the drama and excitement the media craves. With scenes replayed ad nauseam and cliffhangers teased relentlessly, it’s hard to look away. Whether you’re a fan or a critic, there’s no denying it: this is must-watch reality TV. Season II begins with a bang, introducing an entirely new cast (and, true to the series’ brand, the cast is always rotating). The intrigue is palpable, and the stakes feel higher than ever.

The season kicks off with the familiar main character, Donald Trump, taking center stage once again. This time, he returns to the spotlight amid multiple controversies—legal battles, and authoritarian ambitions. As expected, the script dives straight into chaos. Will he be able to reclaim his position as the protagonist of the nation’s political drama? The writers (or perhaps fate) have ensured plenty of subplots to keep viewers hooked.

Season II introduces a revolving door of new characters, from Trump’s fresh legal team to his political allies. There’s a blend of seasoned veterans making cameos—think Marco Rubio, Kristi Noem, John Ratcliffe, Matt Gaetz, and others—alongside newcomers eager to steal the spotlight. Among the highlights are new and controversial Republican stars like, Elon Musk, Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard, each trying to carve out their own narrative while dealing with Trump’s towering presence.

Then there are the antagonists: prosecutors, judges, and political rivals all vying to challenge Trump’s dominance. These new additions to the cast add depth to the drama, though some may argue the constant cast changes make it harder to keep track of the storylines.

As always, the production value is... well, inconsistent. This show operates on a mix of high-stakes tension and low-budget theatrics. Trump’s campaign rallies feel like a rerun of Season I, complete with MAGA hats, chants, chaos, and inflammatory rhetoric. On the other hand, his appointments add a new layer of tension, as the stakes are undeniably higher this time around.

The pacing, however, is relentless. Whether you’re tuning in on cable news or scrolling through social media, The Trump Show dominates the airwaves. The producers (read: the American oligarchs) know exactly how to keep viewers engaged, even if it means sacrificing nuance for spectacle.

This episode reminds us why The Trump Show remains so divisive yet addictive. Themes of power, loyalty, and consequence loom large. Trump’s ability to command attention, even under scrutiny, is both his greatest asset and most significant liability. For some, he’s a symbol of defiance; for others, he’s a cautionary tale.

Season II raises important questions: How far will Trump go to regain his influence? Will his legal troubles derail him at all? And perhaps most importantly: are we, as a nation, merely passive viewers, or are we participants in this ongoing drama? With their new show The Authoritarian, producers are keen to see if viewers will remain passively watching or will act.

Love him or loathe him, Donald Trump doesn’t know how to govern or respect our Constitution, but he knows how to put on a show. The first episode of Season II delivers on the drama, unpredictability, and larger-than-life spectacle that has defined his time in the public eye. Whether you tune in out of fascination, frustration, or sheer disbelief, there’s no denying it—this is a story that continues to captivate audiences everywhere.

Rating: ★★★★☆

(For entertainment value, not for moral substance!)

Polls: The New “Rigged Election”

George Gallup released his first opinion poll in 1935.

Once Republican

George Gallup released his first opinion poll in 1935. These were independent polls as he wouldn’t take money to guard against bias perceived or otherwise. His approach built became huge brand with many citing his samples of public sentiment as the most accurate available. Their approach was simple, as pollsters went door to door to figure out what people were thinking. Later, phone polling was faster and cheaper and still reliable … until 2012 where cell phone had become ubiquitous.

That thing you spend so much time with and rely has hobbled how pollsters do their work (97% of Americans have a cell phone). Steve Jobs disrupted more than just the consumer electronics industry. Phone polls were largely done through landlines since the 1980s. All the pollster’s methodologies are what is called “probability-based”, they are an attempt to get to a true random sample as possible. This was achievable where the NPA-NXX, the first six digits on your landline would ensure your location. But today with number portability (The Telecommunications Act of 1996), Cellular, and VoIP Technologies out bound survey dialing doesn’t guarantee geographic accuracy, the pollster needs to ask where they are registered to vote and there lies the second issue. There has been a huge shift in answering how Americans answer the phone. Many simply will not answer the phone if they don’t recognize the caller and who has time today to answer a lot of questions? Jon Clifton, CEO of Gallup calls the response rates in the United States as “they’re abysmal”.

The fundamentals of traditional polling have been broken and hence, the sampling isn’t accurate. Again, Clifton says “It’s bad. I mean, it’s so bad …” when referring to responses. Americans are inundated with polls. Mainstream Media (MSM) isn’t pausing to give you the methodologies used, it’s in their interest to simply toss out the numbers and then talk it to death for rest of the segment reinforcing the inherently flawed data. Pollsters need to sell a product and MSM needs it to engage viewers is a “tight loop”. And that is the more well intended side of it.

To compound things, to compliment disinformation or fake news is the “phony poll”. These polls leverage the “tight loop” in an attempt to deceive voters entirely. These are paid for by PACs where it “demobilizes voters” and make donors shy about throwing good money after bad. It also makes a candidate appear to be doing better than they are to support a claim of a “rigged election”.

In the end, polling—the once-trusted tool for gauging public sentiment—now operates in a fog of uncertainty and manipulation. What was once a straightforward reflection of democratic will has been clouded by technical challenges, dwindling response rates, and partisan distortions. Pollsters face an almost insurmountable task in restoring the credibility of their profession, and the media bears responsibility for amplifying numbers that may be more misleading than illuminating. As voters, we must approach polls with a critical eye, recognizing that the numbers flashing across our screens may tell us less about public opinion and more about the agenda of those who commissioned them. In an era where truth itself is contested; we can no longer afford to take the polls at face value. The stakes are too high.

References

1. Gallup, Inc. (n.d.). Gallup, Inc. Wikipedia. This was his final attempt to consolidate forces—not just to undermine Kamala Harris, but to kickstart the next phase of his plan: overturning an election he knows he is about to lose. As we approach November 5th, we must brace ourselves for a multi-front battle to defend our democracy—political, legal, and in the face of potential insurrection.

The weakest front will likely be the insurrectionist threat. Institutions have learned their lessons from January 6th and are prepared to respond. With Biden in office, we can expect a robust response to any attempts to obstruct or overturn the election, with prosecutions to follow. Over 730 convictions from January 6th and the ongoing “fake elector” trials have established a clear deterrent.

Thanks for reading Once Republican’s Newsletter! MAGA Republicans will fiercely promote the “rigged election” narrative, but many Republicans who aren't fully in Trump’s camp will see a chance to move on. Democrats should offer these Republicans a discreet way to break from Trump. After two election cycles of being bullied by him, the GOP has paid a steep price.

The legal front is the most concerning. We shouldn’t expect evidence of significant election fraud by Democrats, as there was none in 2020. States like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Nevada have already shown they’re prepared to resist partisan interference. However, the real danger lies in what may reach the Supreme Court—a Court that has shown alarming partiality to Trump and the GOP. Today, just a week before the election, SCOTUS disregarded the National Voter Registration Act to allow Virginia to purge 1,600 voters. SCOTUS remains a threat we may need to confront through peaceful protest.

Now, we must be prepared to step out of our comfort zones, unite, and hold large demonstrations. We must tell SCOTUS they cannot hand over our democracy to an authoritarian. As Kamala Harris said, Americans have fought for generations to protect and expand our freedoms, from civil rights to the beaches of Normandy. “We are not a vessel for the schemes of wannabe dictators.”

Now, it’s our turn.

Thanks for reading Once Republican’s Newsletter! A penetration tester1 is someone who attacks a system adversarially. The term is predominantly used in relation to technology and "White Hat" hackers, but it aptly describes the tactic increasingly used to push past our democratic and institutional norms.

Constitutional questions, like presidential immunity2, were clear, taught to us in school, have been exercised since the birth of our country, and as stated with conviction by my seventh-grade civics teacher, are “enshrined in the Constitution.” No one was above the law; it was simple. According to this Supreme Court, that is a myth.

Thanks for reading Once Republican’s Newsletter! Years ago, conservatives realized that their core beliefs were losing ground to an increasingly diverse electorate that required a more equal society. The White Christian patriarchy felt the need to take drastic measures, and so it began with Reagan. The steps are clear in hindsight:

1. Remove the unions, lower taxes, and destabilize the middle class (Reagan).

2. Direct the money taken from the middle class into politics to control the House and Senate (Citizens United) 3.

3. Elect a president with the right mix of ignorance, pedestrian appeal, and a corrupt mindset (American Oligarchs).

4. Break norms by leveraging the previous steps and fill the Supreme Court with enablers (White Christian Patriarchy).

All these steps have brought us to this point; it was not a natural progression or an accident. It is a deliberate action taken to reverse the course of democracy to retain power, disregarding the norms, laws, and rules by which we have lived.

The hypocrisy is undeniable; "conservatives" are pushing for these "changes" in our democracy. "Originalism" is a contrived construct to justify changes to the norms, our collective agreements about what is right and wrong, and that bind us as a trusting society.

1 Tiller, James S. Trump is front and center in this indictment, and 18 of his associates are culpable. But, this indictment is different than the other three, it is about the entire Republican party.

This indictment exposes, with facts, the party’s corrupt intent and its need to be in power despite our democracy and the will of the people. This is about a party that has surrendered itself to a conman, a liar, a criminal, and a demonstrated malignant narcissist. It’s about conservative leaders who cowardly stand and cheer on a losing candidate who will rally their base, so they don’t have to. They hide in his shadow while he dog-whistles racism, divides us, spews hate, and lies in a pathetic attempt to gain power. To borrow a phrase from Musk, The Republican party is on “Full Self-Campaigning “, Trump spews disgusting lies and they all get swept along as long as they won’t attack him for it. They believe this is a winning strategy, with no personal risk and with the upside of a voter base. But they are wrong.

They are wrong because this isn’t about just Trump, Willis will show the rot of a corrupt party. The Georgia DA will show the world how all those things we thought looked “fishy” were planned and intentionally executed to overturn one of the most scrutinized elections in American history. This will prove that Trump’s big lie is just that and that he had help not from just his inner circle ala Nixon but, from Republican state and federal legislators across the country. This indictment will send many to prison as there is no defense only the familiar whining, spinning, and intimidation that is Trump’s and now the Republican party’s brand.

Thanks for reading Once Republican’s Newsletter! There is a strong reason to believe this was an employment action because he did not have a prepared statement for the media and was not given the opportunity to say "goodbye." It is possible that Tucker refused to comply with changes Fox wanted in response to recent legal action concerning systematic dishonesty, or perhaps Carlson faced issues related to Abby Grossberg, his recently fired producer, or something else entirely. This development represents a turning point in the assault on American democracy, which some attribute to the Republican party, while others disagree.

Without a doubt, the Republican party has embraced what Chris Lehmann calls "Zombie Populism." But is this truly the core issue? The party has always exhibited zombie-like behavior in politics and voting, but the recent emergence of populism is what makes it particularly dangerous. The question then arises: how did this form of populism and its distorted sense of patriotism become part of the party? The answer lies in the aggressive actions of oligarchs and wealthy individuals worldwide, including in the United States. Putin, Murdoch, Musk, Tchenguiz, Mercer, Crowe, and many others have actively pursued outcomes that have deliberately enabled Zombie Populism, ranging from the expansion of the NRA to Citizens United, and from Cambridge Analytica to the controversial influence of SCOTUS. The Zombie Populists, including the Republican party, conservative Christians, racists, militias, and other disenfranchised Americans, have been swayed by the power these oligarchs hold in shaping their perception of the world. However, this does not excuse the anti-democratic behavior of these populists.

Oligarchs and other extremely wealthy individuals are generally united in their efforts to "lift all boats" in the sea of power and money. While social media is often criticized for its negative aspects, it has proven to be a powerful tool against authoritarianism, as demonstrated by the Arab Spring and more recently, the Mahsa Amini protests. These authoritarians have had to take aggressive action to counter the influence of social media, lest they lose their power to democracy.

America is now at a juncture where its true values and institutions are being challenged by oligarchs and authoritarians. The fight is far from over. To overcome this challenge, it is crucial to continue reversing the aggressive actions taken in recent decades, starting with unveiling the truth so that all Americans can bear witness. The only way to unite is to confront our past and ask if this is the direction we should be heading. Most people want stronger gun control, access to abortion, a living wage, and affordable healthcare. The truths being revealed today only reinforce these majorities. We must persevere in the fight, expose the truth, and combat lies and misinformation. Together, we can prevail..we got this!
